BOXED-WARNING-EQUIVALENT WARNING on the label: 'Pitocin is not indicated for elective induction of labor' (no medical indication) because the available data are inadequate to evaluate benefit-risk. Label also warns of severe water intoxication (with convulsions/coma, and maternal death reported) with prolonged infusion, and of uterine hyperstimulation causing uterine rupture, lacerations, postpartum hemorrhage, fetal hypoxia/bradycardia and death.
